About Us

The Nation Media Group (NMG) founded by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1959 has become the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa. It has been quoted on the Nairobi Stock Exchange since the early 1970s.

As the leading multi-media house in the East African region, it has print as well as electronic media and the Internet which attracts a regular readership quite unparalleled in the region.

On the financial front, the Group's performance over the years has been outstanding even in the leaner economic periods in the country and shows continuous growth and profits for the company as well as the shareholders.



A WORLD CLASS VISION

Mr Linus Gitahi The Nation was founded by His Highness the Aga Khan as a voice for the majority African population as it clamoured for independence. After independence, the newspaper became an effective voice of the people. I must pay tribute to the founder and successive managements for building the company into the foremost media organisation in East and Central Africa.

Indeed, the story of the Nation has become synonymous with the story of Kenya. The two were age mates in a manner of speaking as Kenya attained independence three years after the group was founded. As we celebrate 50 years of publishing, the biggest factor in the Nation's success is that the founders were genuine in their desire to have an independent media group. Over the years, the group has maintained high governance standards that have seen its media outlets through challenging times. As we march into the future, my promise to Kenya on behalf of Nation staff is that we will stay true to our stake-holders vision and leave a worthy legacy.

Nothing matters in this journey more than the integrity transparency and balance in journalism that we have publicly committed ourselves to. And our journalism will only be of significance if it positively transforms the society we serve, if it brings to that society social, economic and political progress. For this, I thank those who helped build this group and the equally dedicated men and women toiling today to take it to greater heights. Our dream is to be the media of Africa for Africa.

The business landscape is changing rapidly and only those who evolve to the rhythm of the digital revolution and related advances in technology will survive and grow. The Nation has always been at the cutting edge of technology. We were among the first to adopt modern printing in the sixties and similarly pioneered phototypesetting in this part of the world. We will continue to modernize our media and adjust our journalism to suit the demands of the information age even as we explore opportunities in new markets. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has helped the Nation Media Group to what it is today. Monitor Publications Ltd - Uganda
The Monitor was started in 1992 and has grown from a basement operation to a multi-media consortium with offices spread across Kampala city. Besides the daily and Sunday Monitor papers, Monitor Publications Ltd. runs an FM radio station, 93.3 KFM. All these products have been re-launched in the past year to great success. Daily Monitor and Sunday Monitor are now the leading independent national newspapers in Uganda while KFM attained market leadership in Uganda's crowded FM market.

Mwananchi Communications Ltd - Tanzania
The Nation Media Group has controlling shareholding in Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) of Tanzania. MCL publishes Kiswahili papers Mwananchi daily and Mwana Spoti a weekly all-sports newspaper.

In September 2004, MCL launched an English daily, The Citizen which has taken competition by storm. The MCL has managed in its short history to develop into a major player in the media scene in Tanzania committed to editorial independence and journalistic excellence. The Nation group's investment represents yet another milestone in the group's efforts to be a truly regional company.

Nation Broadcasting Division
Although the Nation Media Group (NMG) has had a newspaper division since 1960 its broadcasting division comprising NTV and Easy FM were launched only in 1999. Besides giving accurate and informative news which shape the opinions of the general public, the electronic division now entertains with music, movies, comedies and talk shows.

In 2003, licenses and frequencies were allocated to the Group and television and radio services were rolled out to most of the major towns around the country. The expansion plan is on course in line with our vision To be the Media of Africa for Africa. NTV Uganda began its broadcasts late last year and has already taken Uganda by storm. Its bold reporting of news and information is in line with our efforts to report African issues authoritatively to local and international audiences.

Nation Carriers Division
The Nation Group runs its own transport company, the Nation Carriers Limited which has a well-maintained fleet to distribute its products around the country. The facility provides all transport needs for the other divisions of the company and enables the regular repair and servicing of the company's vehicles.

Nation Courier, a subsidiary of Nation Carriers, is a fast-growing courier section. In addition to their promise of delivering first, Nation Courier now has international links after signing up with TNT Worldwide Express to deliver mail and packages outside of the country.

Nation Marketing and Publishing Ltd
Nation Marketing and Publishing Ltd. (NM&P) distributes various international titles such as the Economist, Times, Newsweek and Fortune magazines. It also produces a local free sheet, The Weekly Advertiser which continues to grow year after year with increasing editorial specials.

Nation Newspapers Division
The Nation took its place on the newsstands on October 3, 1960 promising to do our utmost to help Kenya and the other East African territories make the perilous transition to African majority rule and full independence as peacefully and constructively as possible. That it did with great success, judging by the many high-level political personalities, known then as nationalists who looked to the newspaper to air their hitherto read views.

The history of the Nation newspaper group is closely entwined with that of modern Kenya and the newspaper has remained true to its stated mission to be independent, subject neither to factional, commercial, religious or political interests.

Board of Directors

Mr Wilfred Kiboro

Mr. Wilfred Kiboro (68) holds a Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from the University of Nairobi. He retired from NMG as the Group Chief Executive Officer on 31st October 2006 after working for the Company for thirteen years. He was appointed a non-executive director in December 2006 and was elected the Chairman of the Board on 24th September 2009.

He is a member of the Nominations Committee. Mr. Kiboro is the Chairman of Family Bank Limited and Wilfay Investments Limited, a family owned enterprise.

Mr Dennis Aluanga

Mr. Dennis Aluanga (45) holds an MBA from the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom) and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. He was appointed to the board in March 2009. He is a Partner at Helios Investment Partners, an Africa focused private investment firm. He was previously the Chief Operating Officer at Industrial Promotion Services (East Africa) and also worked at NMG as the Group Finance Director and the Chief Operating Officer.

He is also a director of Equity Bank Limited and Vivo Energy Kenya Limited. Mr.Aluanga chairs the Finance and Audit Committee and is a member of the Editorial Committee.

Mr Richard Dowden

Mr. Richard Dowden (63) holds a Bachelor of Arts (History) from London University (United Kingdom). He began his career in journalism as the Editor of the Catholic Herald in 1976, before joining The Times foreign desk in 1980 reporting from the Middle East and Africa. He joined The Independent in 1986 as the Africa Editor, moving to the Economist in 1995 as Africa Director until 2001, when he resigned to become a freelance journalist and writer.

He was appointed the director of the Royal African Society in 2002. Mr. Dowden has produced several television documentaries on Africa which have been aired on BBC and Channel 4 television stations in the UK and is the author of the book Africa: Altered States, Ordinary Miracles which was published in 2008. He joined the board in March 2010 and is a member of the Editorial and the Strategic Planning Committees.

Mr Stephen Gitagama

Mr. Stephen Gitagama (46) holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. He is the Group Finance Director and was appointed to the Board in March 2008. He previously worked as a Finance Director with East African Breweries Limited. Mr. Gitagama is a director of the Groupís Subsidiary Companies and is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Mr Linus Gitahi

Mr. Linus Gitahi (50) holds an MBA from the United States International University and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi. He is a Fellow of Kenya Institute of Management.

He is the Group Chief Executive Officer and joined the board in December 2006. He previously worked as the Managing Director of Glaxosmithkline based in Nigeria. He is a director of the International Press Institute, the Africa Media Initiatives, the Groupís subsidiary companies and PDM Holdings Limited, an associate Company.

Mr. Gitahi was honored with the Moran of the Burning Spear. He is a member of the Nominations, the Editorial and the Strategic Planning Committees.

Mr Lee Huebner

Prof. Lee Huebner (72) holds a Ph.D and an MA from Harvard University and a BA from Northwestern University (USA) and is a Professor of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. (USA). He was formerly a professor at Northwestern University and has also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Herald Tribune in Paris for fourteen years. He joined the board in December 1995. Prof. Huebner is the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee and is a member of the Nominations Committee.

Dr Yasmin Jetha

Dr. Yasmin Jetha (61) holds a Master of Science in Management Science from Imperial College (London) and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from London University (United Kingdom). She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Leicester (United Kingdom) in 2005 and was made an honorary Fellow of the University of Bedfordshire (United Kingdom) in 2011.

She was the Chief Information Officer, until June 2014, at Bupa, a leading health care company and was previously the Chief Operating Officer at the Financial Times (United Kingdom). Dr. Jetha joined the board in September 2009 and is the Chairman of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Mr James Kinyua

Mr. James Kinyua (49) (Group Company Secretary) holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from York University (Canada). He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is also a Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (CPS K) and a member of the Institute of Directors (Kenya). He is an alumni of the Cambridge University Advanced Leadership Programme. He was appointed the Company Secretary in July 1998 and is the head of the Legal and Administration department. He is a director of the Groupís subsidiary companies.

Prof. Olive Mugenda

Prof. Olive Mugenda (58) holds a Ph.D and an M.Sc in Family Studies, Education, Consumer Sciences and Research Methods from Iowa State University (USA), an MBA from the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute and a B.Ed from the University of Nairobi. She has been the Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University since 2006, where she has held various senior lecturing positions since 1984. Prof. Mugenda joined the board in September 2010 and is a member of the Editorial and the Human Resources and Remuneration Committees.

Dr. Simon Kagugube

Dr. Simon Kagugube (57) holds a Ph.D in International Humanitarian Law, a Doctor of Science of Law in Immigration, Refugees and Asylum Law and a Masters of Laws in Corporation Law, Taxation and International Trade Systems, all from Yale University (USA) and a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University (Uganda). He is the Executive Director of Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited in Uganda. He joined the Board on 22nd September 2011 and is the Chairman of the Board of Monitor Publications Limited in Uganda. Dr. Kagugube is a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Mrs Zuhura Muro

Mrs. Zuhura Muro (52) holds a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and a post graduate diploma in General Management. She was the head of Human Resources for Celtel Tanzania Limited (now trading as Airtel) from 2001 until May 2007, when she resigned to pursue personal interests. She is the Chairwoman of Mwananchi Communications Limited, a director of KCB Tanzania Limited and the Managing Director of Kazi Services Limited all based in Tanzania. Mrs. Muro joined the board in September 2010 and is a member of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.

Mr Francis Okomo Okello

Mr. Francis Okomo Okello (63) holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, an Albert Parvin Fellow of Princeton University (USA) as well as a Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers (FKIB). He is the Executive Director in charge of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Industrial Promotion Services Group of Companies. He joined the board in December 1995. Mr. Okello is the Chairman of Barclays Bank of Kenya Limited and also TPS Eastern Africa Limited (Serena Group of hotels and lodges). Mr Okello is the Chairman of the Editorial Committee.

Mr Anwar Poonawala

Mr. Anwar Poonawala (67) holds a Master of Science (Industrial Engineering) and an MBA from the University of Iowa (USA). He joined the board in June 1989. He has been associated with the Aga Khan Development Network for over thirty years and retired in 2006 as the director of Industrial Promotion Services based in Paris, France. Mr Poonawala is a director of AKFED. He is a member of the Finance and Audit, the Nominations and the Human Resources and Remuneration Committees.

Mr Gerard Wilkinson

Mr. Gerard Wilkinson (69) holds a MEcon.Sc and MS and a BA, from Ireland and the United States of America. He lectured at the School of Business University College, Dublin, Ireland. He has served as a senior executive at Independent Newspapers, in Dublin, the Managing Director, Nation Newspapers in Kenya, Managing Director, ASPACOS, Consorzio Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy and Head of Public Affairs at the Aga Khan Secretariat in Paris, France.

He initially served on the board from September 1973 until 1980 and rejoined the board in April 1983. Mr. Wilkinson is the Chairman of the Nominations Committee and is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee.

James Montgomery, Non-executive Director Digital

Mr. James Montgomery (47) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Philosophy (Hons) from the University of Durham (UK). He is the Controller, digital and technology, BBC Global News which provides international news in 27 languages. He previously worked as an Assistant Editor for the Financial Times. Mr. Montgomery joined the Board in September 2012 and is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Ms. Njeri Karago

Holds a Masters of fine Arts degree (Theatre Film and Television) from the university of California and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Kenyatta University. She has over 20 yearsí experience in professional film making with emphasis on development and producing and is recognized as a leader in the field of film production, having produced a number of high profile award winning films. She was appointed to the board on 1st March 2013.

Executive Team

Gideon Aswani - Group Head of Production

Gideon holds an MBA in Finance from University of Leicester and is a qualified Mechanical Engineer. Gideon joined NMG as a mechanical engineer in 1995 having previously worked for Thomas De La Rue (K) Ltd. and The East African Breweries Ltd.

He is the Chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Athi River Chapter.

Mr. Linus Gitahi - Group CEO

Holds an MBA from USIU and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi. He is the Group Chief Executive Officer and joined the board in December 2006. He previously worked with a leading pharmaceutical company as Managing Director based in Nigeria.

He is a director of the Group's subsidiary companies and Property Development and Management Limited, an associate company. Mr. Gitahi is a member of the Nominations, the Editorial and the Strategic Planning Committees.

Mr Gabriel Chege - Group IT Director

Gabriel Chege, MCSE, MCDBA, MCT, CCNA, Siemon CI, ITIL is the Group Head of Information Technology and holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in the Management of Information Systems. He joined the group in 2002 from PricewaterhouseCopper's [PwC] Global Technology Solutions (GTS) division and has an industry experience spanning 15 years that has seen him work for a variety of companies within Eastern Africa ranging from Public companies as well as large private organisations.

Gabriel was instrumental in the re-engineering and re-design of the www.nation.co.ke. Gabriel is currently pursing a Masters in Information Systems Management (ISM) from the University of London (UK).

Mr. Ian Fernandes, Managing Director, TV

Holds a Bsc. Electronic Engineering from the University of Nairobi. He joined NMG in 2005 and has more than 17 years experience in the media industry having previously served as Technical & Production Director at the Standard Newspaper Group and as the Managing Director of KTN.

He spearheaded the re-launch of Nation Television as NTV and Nation Fm as EasyFm. He was instrumental in the design and conceptualization of NTV Uganda and the launching of e-Africa, the latest addition to NMG's television stable.

Ms Anne Gitao - Kinyua - Group Marketing Director

Ann Gitao - Kinyua joined NMG in May 2008 as Head of Marketing Nation Broadcast Division. In August 2009, she was promoted to the Group, Head of Marketing function. Ann has more than 10 years executive experience in mining consumer insights, shaping strong brand positioning strategies and crafting successful communication strategies and has played a lead role in the development of communication strategies for a multitude of clients spanning several categories including: foods, banking, airlines, social marketing, media and alcoholic drinks.

She holds a BCom Degree in Marketing and is currently studying for an MBA at Henley Business School University of Reading, UK.

Mr. James Kinyua - Company Secretary

Holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from York University (Canada).

He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is also a Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (CPS) and a member of the Institute of Directors (Kenya).

Mr. Agastee Khante - General Manager, Digital Division

Agastee joined NMG in June 2010. He holds a Masters Degree in Finance and Strategic Human Resources Management from the Oxford Brookes University and an Engineering Degree, from RVCE, Bangalore.

He has over 8 years experience of Digital Marketing and Product Management experience having previously worked in the digital divisions at Yahoo Jagran, Financial Times and The Times of India.

Mr. Stephen Gitagama - Group, Finance Director

Holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya.

He is the Group Finance Director and was appointed to the Board in March 2008. He previously worked as a Finance Director with East African Breweries Limited.

Mr. Gitagama is a director of the Group's subsidiary companies.

Mrs. Elizabeth Kyengo - General Manager Group Procurement

Elizabeth holds a BCom (Accounting Option) degree from Kenyatta University, and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPAK) and a Member of KISM, has and is finalizing a MBA degree in Strategic Management at Nairobi University.

She joined the Group in April 1995 from Coopers and Lybrand where she worked as an Auditor. She has held various positions within the Group including, Management Accountant NCD and NBD, Procurement Manager before taking up her current role.

Tom Mshindi - Managing Director Nation Newspapers Division

He is a media and communications expert who has trained and worked as a journalist, a development communications specialist for the UN, and a senior media manager in Kenya and abroad. Mr. Mshindi has more than 20 years of experience working in the media. He worked for the Nation Media Group in Nairobi as a journalist and rose to become the managing editor of its flagship newspaper, the Daily Nation, before joining UNICEF as an editor in New York.

He then served as UNICEF's chief of communication in its Nigeria programme, its largest in Africa. After the stint at the UN, he worked as the managing director and chief executive officer of the Standard Media Group in Kenya, and later the managing director of the Monitor Publications Ltd in Uganda (which is owned by the Nation Media Group).

In between the two assignments, he managed Lovelife Media Africa Ltd and Words Warehouse, two firms that offered a wide range of consultancy, training and publishing services in communication strategies and management. He also helped set up Kenya's television station Channel 2.

Mr Japhet Mucheke, Group Financial Controller

Japhet joined Nation Media Group in 1997 from Deloitte & Touche. He has since then worked as the Group Chief Accountant and Group Internal Audit Manager before being promoted to Group Financial Controller in June 2008.

Japhet is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified SAP Consultant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree from the University of Nairobi and is currently studying for an MBA at University of Leicester UK.

Sam Mutetei - GM Sales & Distribution

Sam took up his current role in September 2009 from the Standard Group, having initially joined NMG in 1992. He has over 16 years hands on experience in sales and distribution and has initiated radical changes in the Distribution Value Chain.

He also has benefitted from wide international exposure in distribution and logistics in Europe and in the US. Sam is a Political Science graduate from the University of Nairobi, and holds a Higher Diploma in Business Management from KIM and a MBA in Strategic Management from Moi University.

Mr Victor Ngei - Director for Special Projects

Mr Victor Ngei holds a Bachelor of Education (Business) from Kenyatta University and is currently pursuing an MBA degree at ESAMI, Nairobi.

He joined the Group in 1995 as a Sales Supervisor and has served as the Advertising Manager at Monitor Publications, Advertising Manager for NTV and Easy FM before moving to NTV Uganda at its inception as the General Manager.

Victor is involved in several community initiatives and serves in various school boards around the country.

Mr. Michael Ngugi - Group, Advertising Director

Michael has been Group Advertising Director since January 2009. He Holds a BSc. degree from Jacksonville University, Florida, US and is also a Harvard Business School, General Management Program Alumni.

He has 15 years experience in sales and general management in telecommunications, FMCG, petroleum sectors. Michael has previously held senior positions within the advertising and circulation functions in the Group.

Mr Philip Velese - Country Manager,Rwanda.

He joined NMG in 1998 as a Sales Representative and has served as regional circulation manager, Head of Nation Carriers division, and most recently as Commercial Manager for The East African.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kenyatta University and is currently pursuing an MBA in Marketing at the University of Nairobi.

He holds a diploma in Business Management from KIM and is a Member of Kenya Institute of Management (MKIM).

Joseph Odindo, Group Editorial Director

A Career journalist and senior editor and holds an MA Journalism from the University of Wales, UK and a BEd Degree from University of Nairobi.

He is also a Harvard GMP Alumni and a Cambridge University, Wolfson College Press Fellow. He became the Group Editorial Director in August 2009 having worked as a managing editor for various NMG Print products for 16 years.

Olga Arara-Kimani, General Manager Ė Business Development & Innovation

She joined NMG from Google, where she was the Country Manager, Kenya. She holds a MBA Ė Engineering Business Management from Manchester Business School, UK. She has been named one of Forbes Top 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa.

Chrysantus Macheso, Group Head of Audit

Chrys joined Nation Media Group in June 2012 from Nairobi Securities Exchange. He has previously worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Chrys is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Information Systems Auditor, a Certified Quality Assessor of the Institute of Internal Auditors and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi.

Nation Media Group (NMG) has undergone remarkable transformation. Founded in 1960, from two struggling Kenyan newspapers, one Kiswahili and one English, half a century ago, the Group has grown into the largest multimedia enterprise in East and Central Africa. NATIONLIFE: CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY


Our commitment to communities was in the areas of Education, Health, Environment and Community sponsorship. Targeting the next generation of East African leaders, we extended the Get on the Bus Scholarship, Excellence and Mentorship programme from Uganda to Kenya. The programme is set to benefit bright post primary students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A campaign mooted and named UME-DOO in collaboration with several other corporates, joined forces to support the Kenya Red Cross Society to help alleviate the famine situation in Kenya. This preceded the Kenyans for Kenya campaign that involved a campaign outreach to Kenyans of goodwill. As part of the initiative, our staff climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to contribute towards long-term food security projects.

Save the Mau Trust, an initiative by Nation Media Group, East African Breweries Limited, Equity Bank, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Green Belt Movement planted 350,000 tree seedlings in the Mau Escarpment, following the allocation of 4,000 hectares by the Government of Kenya for rehabilitation at the Eburru Forest. The target of planting one million trees in phase 1 of the project is on course.

During our annual Community Week held in October, the staff supported several community projects in Kenya and Uganda, which benefited from a fund matching scheme from the Group.

Our CSI section is therefore responsible for maintaining good contacts with key stakeholders to ensure sustainable community partnerships; planning and driving the promotion, co-ordination and delivery of employee participation in community events. The key pillars of our Corporate Social Investment are Education, Environment, Community and Health. This is with the realization that Corporate Social investment and Citizenship programmes has to be more strategic in deploying resources and in projects with a large footprint and greater impact at a national stage.

Being a good corporate citizen involves all the ways in which our business and products interact with society and the natural world, and encompasses the balance between acting responsibly and the right to trade freely. It includes ethics, governance, relations with employees, customers, consumers and suppliers, communities, health and safety and the environment.

Environment
While our main products- Newspapers- use recycled paper, we recognize that our business puts a strain to the environment in which we live. NMG has and will continue to organized and fund various initiatives is support of a sustaining the environment. The Group seeks to provide sustainable support for the preservation of Kenya's environment and natural resources through partnerships to grow forest cover, conserve biodiversity, contribute to the reduction in human-wildlife conflict and promotion of renewal energy sources. We want our business to be sustainable and cause no long-term degradation of natural resources. We acknowledge that our manufacturing operations in East Africa have impacts on the environment. Our approach is to identify these impacts and take steps to reduce them. Although our policy is to achieve continuous improvement in all aspects of environmental performance, we have concentrated our efforts on areas of greatest impact at our production sites: the quality of effluent, the use of energy, and the recycling of solid waste.

Education
Education is key to the development of a country and is a major focus area for Nation Media Group. Through a partnership NMG has sponsored intelligent but needy students, one from every province in Kenya through their secondary education every year since 2006.

Health
NMG recognizes that a working nation needs to be healthy to accomplish the goals of a growing economy. Health is a priority in our programmes as we continue to support Maternal Health, breast cancer awareness and raising awareness on various challenges such as physically and mentally challenged children in society. In focusing on health, we are recognizing the need to provide basic medical care to people who have no access to medical services; primarily slum dwellers and marginalized communities.

Partnerships
The Nation Media Group joined four other partners in hosting the East Africa Business Summit. Every two years The Summit brings together over 80 CEO's from around East Africa to charter the path for the region's economic future.
The Nation Media Group is also proud to be associated with the Kenya Top 100 mid-sized companies survey which seeks to identify Kenya's fastest growing medium sized companies in order to showcase business excellence and highlight some of our most successful entrepreneurship stories.

Creativity and innovation, at the heart of all entrepreneurial experiences, are key pillars of the NMG. As the media market leaders, we believe in creating business solutions and developing ground-breaking products and this survey provided just such an opportunity. Indeed Business Daily, the premium newspaper launched in March 2007 and the only daily business publication featuring business news and analysis for the Kenyan market, is aimed at developing entrepreneurship in Kenya by making business make sense. The Next Big Thing Initiative was launched to encourage innovation and budding entrepreneurs to build on their ideas and attract potential investors and mentors.

In partnership with KPMG, we at the NMG recognized that our economy is grown by small and mid-sized companies. However, only the big, successful companies are recognized, meaning there is no authoritative grading of smaller businesses or unified platform for the mid-sized businesses to network and be assessed. 

The Top 100 survey presents an opportunity for participants to contribute to the development of industry databases and further to benchmark themselves against their peers. The Top 100 will further enjoy recognition as top performers at both national and industry level and as members of a prestigious club of prosperity creators. The Top 100 will also attract the interest of private equity investors or industry   strategic partners, providing them with the opportunity to network with investors a means of raising expansion capital and or securing strategic partners.

Participation was free for the companies who registered and the process entailed submission of data on financial indicators.

Nation's CSI's activities are not just a matter of giving away money or supporting in kind through complimentary advertising or airtime. Our well managed CSI programmes support the business objectives of the company, build relationships with key stakeholders whose opinion will be most valuable whether times are hard or not, and aim to reduce business costs and maximize effectiveness.  At the Nation Media Group, we care about lives, we change lives.

Communications
The Communication section assesses the mood, attitudes and perceptions of the company's publics and interprets them for action.
Through our in-house publication, NationLife, internal and external publics are kept informed of developments within the Newspaper, Broadcasting and Digital, ICT, Finance and Human Resource divisions. The monthly CEO Statement ensures staff throughout the Nation Group in Kenya Uganda and Tanzania are up to date on company businesses and its vision to be the media of Africa for Africa.
Through the intranet staff are able to engage directly with the Group CEO Linus Gitahi under the Ask the CEO link and are also encouraged to exchange views and engage in debate with each other



NationLife - programmes

GET ON THE BUS

The Nation Media Group Mentorship and Excellence Initiative Get On The Bus is a is a corporate citizenship investment by NMG to mould the next generation of leaders for East Africa. It will also provide and encourage excellence in life for all beneficiaries. The Programme  recognizes that many qualified KCPE pupils fail to pursue excellence in life because of the high cost of education.

The initiative seeks to enhance access to secondary education and transforming the lives of young people for leadership . The selection of the beneficiaries is based on academic excellence at KCPE and the level of self motivation and need demonstrated during the vetting process.

THE PINK PROJECT

Nation Media Group created The Pink Project, an initiative that seeks to provide information, screening and treatment to women in marginalized areas of the country in the low income bracket and raise awareness and funding to fight this preventable disease.

In partnership with leading hospitals, as well as the government, the project availS information on breast health and screening to women who would otherwise not afford to do so due to limited resources, information or access to healthcare.

The programme also engages in Breast Screening outreach camps which provide free breast screening for women countrywide.

SAVE THE MAU

Saving the Mau is not just about the forest and water, or our lakes and rivers. it is also about the complex relationship between communities and their environment. We need to work together and involve communities in order to protect our forests.Save The Mau Trust was constituted in July, 2009. The Trust incorporates five partners namely; East African Breweries Ltd. (EABL), Equity Bank Ltd. (EBL), Nation Media Group Ltd (NMG), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Green Belt Movement (GBM).

In November 2010, during the launch of the Eburru forest block rehabilitation Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officially handed to Save the Mau Trust, 4000 HA of forest land. KWS and GBM have mobilized their staff, other organizations, communities and individuals in raising 1,000,000 tree seedlings for reforestation activities for the protection of the Mau Ecosystem.

NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION PROJECT

The program seeks to improve the quality of future leaders by exposing them to the real world and involves weekly delivery of newspapers and school-based learner activities to participating primary schools particularly in marginalized areas in Kenya and Uganda. 

Taking on a busy bee icon to notarize transition to leadership, Newspapers in Education (NiE) is a Nation Media Group initiative that aims at developing young readers through a school program designed around the newspaper. NiE operates through sponsorship offered by Nation Media Group, Safaricom Limited and Safaricom Foundation.
